Have you ever taken the time to look at a skyscraper, a new house in your neighborhood, or a new hotel or business? If that answer was “yes” you have looked at the work of an architect. Some people will tell you that architecture is part of art. Other people would tell you that architecture is a part of engineering. All of those people would be right!

Architecture and architects have been around for a very long time! Think about the Egyptian Pyramids, Roman Colosseum, Sydney Australia’s Opera House, the Eifel Tower, and Empire State Building. All of those structures are examples of architecture and engineering working together!

What do architects do?

According to careerexplorer.com, “An architect is someone who loves to design, and is specifically trained and licensed to work on the planning and design of buildings. Every building is different. Every project is different. The facets of an architect’s role are as varied and fascinating as their work; these are professionals who lead the process of creating functional spaces, from concept and design to a full realization of those designs.”

So in other words you get to be super creative as you design buildings or remodels of existing buildings. But your buildings can’t be just beautiful works of art. They have to be safe too! Architects have to understand math, geometry, and other areas of engineering in order to make safe structures.

What makes a great architect?

To be a great architect you need an entire toolbox of skills! Those skills include:

  • Creativity – Architects have to be creative. People have different wants and needs when it comes to buildings. Being able to use creative problem solving and original ideas can help architects design spaces that fit their clients needs and create awesome spaces to look at too.
  • Computer skills – Being able to use computers effectively is important for architects. This is especially true when it comes to creating blueprints and 3-D models of their designs. Most architects use a computer program called CAD to to assist with their designs.
  • People skills – You might think that architects don’t have to have strong people skills but you would be mistaken. They must be able to listen to the needs of clients and communicate well in writing and verbally.
  • Math/Engineering skills – Due to the nature of architecture strong math skills are needed. A good understanding of geometry and physics is important for safe and successful architecture projects.

What kind of education do I need?

In order to become an architect you will need to continue your education after high school. According to study.com architecture bachelor degree programs, “last five years and focus on architectural theory, structural design and construction methodology. Courses generally cover topics like environmental design, architectural documentation and universal design for the disabled. Students also receive instruction in the use of drafting tools and computer-aided design and drafting software. Some programs combine classroom and design studio work with paid, professional work experience.” After graduating college you have to obtain a license and may consider continuing your education to the masters or Ph.D. levels.
