We have all had more stress in our life due to COVID-19, quarantine, school closures, and more. Well, today we are going to ignore that stress and learn more about one of our awesome CGS teachers. Last year Mrs. Mehring became a Grizzly after a career devoted to the arts. Currently, she teaches Chorus and Theatre to our middle and high school students and Elementary Music. To learn more about this lovely addition to the Clover Garden family.

Tell us a little bit about your family.

“I have been married to my husband, Mark, for 25 years. We have two children. Matt, 23, who will be graduating from App State in December, with a degree in Health Care Management. Ginny, 21, is at ECU pursuing a Child Development degree. We have a black cat named, Blackberry who is 14 years old.”

Where did you attend college and what types of jobs have you held?

“I attended college at UNC-G and majored in Music Education with a Piano Principle. In addition to my studies, I pursued songwriting and singing performing at Church and as a Community events singer. My favorite memories are of singing solo and in groups on the college campus and around Greensboro. After I graduated I took an Interim position as the Chorus Teacher at Turrentine Middle School. After that, I was offered a job in Charlotte, NC, to sing and play with a traveling Beach/Top 40 band. We performed in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. After 2 years, I formed my own Jazz and Pop group and worked as a freelance performer. When I moved back to Burlington, 8 years later, I began performing with The Gallery Players a theatre group. Most recently I have served as Music Director for children and teen theatre in Burlington and Greensboro. I stayed home with my kids and when they went to school, I attended Elon University and earned certified to teach General Education in addition to teaching Music.”

What drives you as an educator?

“My relationships with the kids are what motivates me. I thrive on working with them – motivating them, growing them, holding them accountable, teaching integrity, and hopefully helping them develop into productive, more confident, adults who know how to have positive relationships with others.”

When your students are down how do you lift them up?

“I tell my students that when there is darkness, look at the things in your Life that bring good feelings. There is where your light is; and keeping your eyes on the light will help you find your way through the darkness.”

What is your best advice for students?

Quote from Winnie the Pooh: “Always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you feel, and smarter than you think.”
