This our last week before our 1st Academic Break! We hope that all of you have plans to spend some time with your student and families over our break and get a much needed break! Reminder that this Friday, August 27th will be a half day with dismissal at 12:00 P.M.

Please read the IMPORTANT INFORMATION below as it pertains to Covid-19 and our CGS community.

Covid-19 Updates

The increased spread of COVID-19 in our community in recent weeks is a significant concern for the safety of our students and staff.  The COVID-19 case rates in the major counties we serve are five times higher than they were at start of our school year, just 4 weeks ago.  This increase, driven by the highly contagious Delta variant and a large percentage of people who are unvaccinated, represents a rapid acceleration in the spread of the virus.   As a school, we have not experienced this level of community transmission at any point since we reopened for in person instruction.  The weekly COVID-19 metrics for CGS is attached and will be posted to our school’s website.  There are some key points to be aware of that highlight the seriousness of the current situation:

  • Over the last 10 days, we have had 72 students quarantined due to infection or exposure, which is more than 10% of our student body.  Among those quarantined we have had 11 positive cases of COVID-19 over the last 10 days.
  • For comparison, there were a total of 133 students who were quarantined and 15 positive cases over the entire previous school year in 2020-2021.
  • We are seeing positive cases among all age groups.  The Delta variant is much more of a concern to children than previous variants and currently 20% of COVID-19 cases in Alamance county are in children under 18.  Some of our Alamance county pediatricians provide additional insight on this topic.

We are at a critical juncture.  Our ability to continue to provide a safe learning environment for students is dependent on the cooperation of everyone in our school community.  The consistent use of properly worn, well-fitting masks while indoors is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of the virus.  Masks must completely cover the nose and mouth, and should fit snugly around the face (masks with a nose wire help create a better fit).  It is also imperative that students experiencing any symptoms or have a known exposure stay home and immediately contact our COVID-19 coordinator (Mrs. Cox, jennifercox@cgsnc.org).  When in doubt, reach out.  Over communication is better under these circumstances, so that we are able to provide guidance and take appropriate steps to limit the spread within our school.

We want to provide students with as normal of a school experience as possible, but as the situation evolves, our Health and Wellness committee is adapting by making changes to our procedures as we review the most current data.   We hope to avoid returning to the types of requirements we had last year, as we know that our students are most successful when they are in the classroom full time.  We appreciate your cooperation and flexibility as we navigate these ever-changing tides together.

If you decide to travel over the academic break, please remember that behaviors outside of school have a major impact on our ability to keep our classrooms open.  We are asking that our families please consider what additional steps you can take to reduce your risk of  being exposed or infected during this critical period. Our state public health leaders strongly recommend vaccination for everyone who is eligible, and masking in indoor public spaces for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people. Please make sure you are being SAFE so that we can continue keeping our school doors open for in-person learning.

Progress Reports:

Progress reports for this 9 weeks will go out on August 25th. Please review these with your student.

Mandatory Paperwork:

If you have not returned your student’s mandatory first day paperwork, please do so ASAP. Students are not allowed to be in the building if we do not have those emergency forms on file. Mrs. Lassiter will be in touch with you if you on are this list.

Mandatory Immunizations:

If your student is a 7th or 12th grade student, there are mandatory immunization requirements in order for them to be enrolled in school. This is per North Carolina State Law. Additional details about these immunizations can be found in the Student/Parent Handbook. Documentation of immunizations are due by this Thursday, August 26th. Any students that have not turned in these completed documents will be suspended from school until proof of documentation can be provided. Please email Mrs. Nina if you received a letter from her about this and have questions. Nina Miller ninamiller@cgsnc.org.

Ballgames:

This week, we kicked off our fall sports season with Volleyball games on campus in our gym. We love having the opportunity to have spectators at this time, but if your student plans to stay after school for the games, you MUST first turn in the required paperwork needed to Ms. Robyn, our Before and After School Coordinator. Your student may not “hang around” unsupervised until the games start. They must be supervised by a teacher until 4:30 P.M. when the gate opens for admission for 5:00 P.M. games, or they must enroll in our drop in after school program. If your child plans to stay in after school for ballgames, please email Ms. Robyn at robyncox@cgsnc.org for questions on how to submit the registration form for your student. Please also give her a heads up at least the day prior to your student staying in afterschool so that we can provide coverage in the afternoons. Failure to adhere to this policy may result in your student not being allowed to stay after school for games.
