Clover Garden’s first-grade teacher, Mrs. Wright, has been using her friend Lola to help instruct and engage her first-grade students with mathematics daily.  Students are provided with manipulatives, just like Lola has, so that they can follow along while having a hands-on learning experience with Mrs. Wright.  Students make a connection with Lola and are engaged with the hands-on learning activities.

To begin the daily math lesson, students watch a short instructional warm-up. Lola, who is a cartoon character with Mrs. Wright’s voice, is presenting the material for the daily math objective. Following the video, students are to then complete guided and independent practice worksheet and game boards while Lola is present on their paper to remind the students of the daily math focus.  Students have really enjoyed seeing Lola not only in the instructional videos but also on their daily math practice. This fun cartoon character has helped them stay engaged and on task when it is time for math instruction.

Students have been able to make a connection with Lola and they look forward to learning new math lessons with Lola and Mrs. Wright.  Mrs. Wright focuses on using math vocabulary to encourage higher-level thinking for her students.  In this particular lesson she is highlighting the vocabulary words addend and sum.  This exposure to the vocabulary, hands-on manipulative, and teacher guidance has provided our first graders with strong math content through virtual learning.  Mrs. Wright works extremely hard to create a fun, engaging, hands-on learning experience for each and every student in her class daily.  There has been positive family feedback on all of Mrs. Wright’s thoughtful math lessons.
