Name: Abby Kidd

How many years have you been a student at CGS?

I have been a Grizzly for 13 years, ever since kindergarten!

What clubs, organizations, teams, etc have you been involved with during your high school career?

I have participated in many clubs and extracurriculars throughout my time at CGS. I have participated in Student Council (secretary and president), Junior Civitan (co-public relations coordinator), Mentors Club (co-secretary), Beta Club, Spanish Honors Society, Marching Band (drum major and band captain), Concert Band, Jazz Band, FCA Senior Member, and ACC Dual Enrollment.

What is your favorite Clover Garden memory?

One of my favorite memories is my senior year of marching season. I auditioned for Drum Major and got the position! I never thought I would be able to have this position, much less do so well in it. I earned first place in my class at every competition, and never scored less than second place out of all bands we faced in competition. There is no feeling like knowing when your hard work paid off.

If you had to choose one person from CGS that has really made a difference in your life who would that be?

There are so many teachers I could choose from. First, I want to mention Mrs. Lisa Wilson. She has known me since I was in elementary school. I joined Student Council with her in the 5th grade and have never looked back since! She has shaped me into becoming a good leader and has always taught me to prioritize. Something I will miss about Mrs. Wilson is her ability to come up with a nickname for anyone! We all have one. Mrs. Wilson, Abs/Miss Kiddy loves you! 🙂 My second would be Mrs. Thompson. I have always known her since she started at CGS, but we developed a much stronger relationship during my senior year. She has helped me organize various events and projects, and even helped me when applying to college! Whenever I have a question, concern, or need to ask someone about what a high-interest savings account is… (inside joke) I always run to her. I aspire to be half the woman she is one day. She wears so many hats at CGS and wears each one of them well. My last two are Coach Ward and Coach Dodson. I have had them both as teachers, but also as FCA leaders. I have watched them go through some trials this year, but I have paid attention to their strong faith even more. They encourage us to stick out for the cause of Christ, which is the top quality I could ask for in any teacher, leader, or mentor.

If you had to choose two people from outside CGS that have made a difference in your life who would they be?

First off, I would choose my parents. They have always encouraged me to follow my dreams and work hard at all that I do. One of the most crucial lessons they have taught me is to help someone and work hard without expecting a reward. They have taught me the importance of humility and where it will take you. I have watched my parents take pride in their occupations and bend over backward for anyone in need. Their daily example has shaped me into the person I am. I would not be the person I am without their unconditional love and support. Secondly, I would like to mention the Associate Pastor/Youth Pastor at my church. Matthew Hobbs has been an incredible role model for me in the short time that I have known him. I admire his humility and genuine care for others. His servant’s heart is a heart that I desire to have one day. One of my favorite qualities about Matthew is that he tells me the truth. He gives me the truth out of love and encouragement and only wishes to see me succeed. His desire to push us deeper into the love of Christ has encouraged and challenged me in my life. He not only is my Youth Pastor, but I know I can say that he is my true friend.

What is your plan for after graduation?

I have been accepted to four universities! These include UNC Greensboro, UNC-Chapel Hill, Elon, and Appalachian State. I have already completed most of my credits needed for an Associate in Arts degree, so I will be going in as either a sophomore or junior. As of right now, I plan to pursue a degree in education. I am still unsure of what ages and grade levels I am interested in teaching, but I am so excited to enter this next chapter of my life. I have always had a desire to teach and I am praying this is where God leads me.
