Recently Mrs. Otey, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Hozdovic, and Mrs. Tunstall’s students participated in an art lesson that brought science, art, and literacy together! Students watched a video read aloud of Eric Carle’s, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This classic children’s book takes kids on the journey of metamorphosis from a caterpillar egg, through, hatching, eating a ton of yummy food, entering the chrysalis, and the moment the butterfly emerges!

After watching and listening to the read aloud students were taught how to draw caterpillars using two basic shapes, the circle and oval. Mrs. Thompson explained how using those shapes together could make the caterpillar body and adding a lowercase b to the body sections helped finish off the sketch. Students then added facial features and antennae before learning about primary colors and patterns. Everyone had great fun and this week they will add more detail to their masterpieces! Be on the lookout for updates.
