Last week Coach Johnson had second grade building and working on teamwork skills all while they honed their engineering and problem solving skills. Talk about a lesson that hit multiple subjects and skills!

At the beginning of the year it is especially important to build teamwork skills as a class. Lets face it, a classroom of students is like a big family that works together and independently to learn, play, and grow. To help facilitate strengthening this twenty-first century skill Coach Johnson had students divide into smaller teams and then work together to build cup houses, towers, and castles. He structured these exercises as races which made students rely on each other and find creative strategies to build quickly. Students learned quickly that speed is important but so is engineering carefully! There were a few toppled castles but students got the hang of building and working together.

At the end of class the students engaged in a whole class tower build. Check out the result along the back wall in the photo below.
