Do you love eating bacon or sausage in the morning with your breakfast, or do you enjoy pork chops for dinner?  Have you ever thought about where that meat comes from?  Products like the ones mentioned above are pork products and pork comes from pigs!  Today in our Ag in the Classroom with Mrs. Moore we are going to talk about the pork industry in North Carolina and visit Mrs. Moore’s farm to see baby pigs!

There are more than 2,100 pig farms in North Carolina and our state ranks second in U.S pork production!  Iowa is the state that ranks first in pork production.  The largest pig producing counties in the country are Duplin and Sampson Counties in the eastern part of North Carolina.  In Bladen County, you can find the largest pork processing plant!  The largest bacon plant in the world is located in Wilson County!  (Can you find Alamance County on the map?  Here is a hint:  Alamance County is NORTHWEST of Wilson County.)

In 2015, it was reported that North Carolina exported, shipped out of North Carolina, 739 million dollars worth of pork.  Pork Production is a huge part of our North Carolina economy!

Now, let’s travel to the Moore Farm to visit the baby piggies!

The North Carolina Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom helped Mrs. Moore with this blog post and donated a class set of their Pork Ag Mag to Clover Garden!  Check out this video for more information.
