Last week our first grade classes expanded their knowledge of art and science as they used their creativity to make colorful works of art. Mrs. Thompson gathered dogwood, maple, oak, and other types of leaves before class started. When she came in the students looked at her and immediately asked why she had tree branches and leaves.

First they talked about the different colors of fall. Students mentioned orange, yellow, red, brown, green, and purple. Then they discussed how the leaves change colors and make all those colors show up outside for everyone to enjoy. Students also learned about photosynthesis and how important that process is to our survival. Next the real fun started! Mrs. Thompson asked the students what texture is. Students replied with words like rough, smooth, and bumpy. Texture is how something feels and our students knew how to describe it well! Then students examined their leaves and felt how on the back of the leaves there were lines that made the leaf feel a bit bumpy. Next, they used crayons to create rubbings of the leaves. As the leaves appeared on their papers the ooohs and aaaahs from the students were awesome! They were amazed at how they could transfer the texture of the leaf to their paper with just a crayon.

Check out these artists in action!
