Chances are you know John Deere – You recognize the iconic green and yellow paint, the leaping deer logo, or you have seen a tractor, side-by-side (Gator), or lawn mower made by John Deere.  Have you ever thought about how the company John Deere got started?  Watch this video to find out!

Other John Deere Facts:

  • John Deere was elected the mayor of Moline, Illinois in 1873 and served for two years
  • Even though Deere & Co. is known for its green tractors, John Deere was not alive to see the first gasoline tractor

How did people plow before tractors?  With horses, mules, and oxen! This video from the North Carolina Work Horse and Mule Association does a great job of showing how plowing was done before gas powered machines.

Do you love tractors?  Check out this infographic timeline that shows the History of the Tractor

Today, some farmers in North Carolina and across the United States opt to use “no-till” or “minimum-till” agricultural practices to help preserve soil and to prevent erosion instead of traditional plowing methods.

A huge thank you to the Farm Bureau’s Ag in the Classroom for the book John Deere’s Powerful Idea: The Perfect Plow by Terry Collins and for the facts about John Deere!Thank you to the Alamance County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee for donating and sponsoring our Book Barn in our Library so our Grizzlies can learn about agriculture in and around North Carolina!   A special thanks also goes to Mrs. Moore’s brother in law, Pres King, for the use of his John Deere tractor, garden spot, and video footage of him plowing his garden.  (The Moore’s bleed red when it comes to tractors) ☺
