Do you love eating peanut butter?  Do you know how it is made?  Today we are going to explore how a peanut goes from a plant in the ground, to a delicious snack!

But first, let’s learn some facts about peanuts.  Do you love eating Snickers?   Each candy bar contains about 16 peanuts, and about 100 tons of peanuts are used to make 15 million Snickers bars ever day!  Peanuts produced in the United States are mainly used to make Peanut Butter, followed by snack nuts (like what you get at the ball field), candy and other confections.  George Washington Carver, a renowned scientist and researcher, first recognized the value of peanuts as a cash crop.

How It’s Made: Peanut Butter

Mrs. Moore Harvesting Peanuts

Want to make your own Peanut Butter at home?  Here’s how!

Measure one cup of peanuts and put in blender.  Measure 1 ½ teaspoons peanut (or vegetable) oil and put in blender.  Cover and blend for approximately 3 minutes.  Scrape sides of blender with a spoon and push peanuts to the bottom of the blender.  Add a little salt if desired.  Cover and blend for 3 more minutes.  Scoop out of blender and enjoy on crackers, apple slices, or celery!  How does your homemade peanut butter compare to store bought peanut butter?

A huge thank you to the Farm Bureau’s Ag in the Classroom for the book From Peanuts to Peanut Butter  and peanut facts.  Thank you to the Alamance County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee for donating and sponsoring our Book Barn in our Library so our Grizzlies can learn about agriculture in and around North Carolina!
