Yesterday fifth-graders from Mrs. Browne, Mrs. Nall, and Mrs. Johnson’s classrooms graduated from D.A.R.E. Special guests for graduation included parents and family of graduates, Christian Morgan from WFMY News 2, Chief Deputy Cliff Parker, Captain Curtis Morris, Captain Travis Hackney, Sergeant Jaleesa Washington, and Lieutenant Brandon Mays.
D.A.R.E. Graduation 2020
Corporal Chad Laws, from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, spent one day a week for ten weeks with the CGS fifth graders. Lessons dealt with tough topics such as the dangers associated with tobacco and alcohol use, bullying, prescription drug abuse, peer pressure and more. Students also learned about the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Matrix and how to use that framework to make safe responsible choices.
Christian Morgan, a member of the WFMY Weather Team, was the keynote speaker. As he walked amongst the students he reflected on how D.A.R.E. impacted his life and how making responsible choices isn’t a one-time thing…it is a lifelong commitment to doing the right thing. He also shared a very relevant quote from former President, John Quincy Adams,
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.”― John Quincy Adams
Essay winners were announced, allowed to share their papers with the audience, and awarded medallions. Their words were inspiring and reminded everyone of the importance of the D.A.R.E. program! Vaughn Willoughby from Farm Bureau Insurance announced the grand prize essay winner. The grand prize winner received a bookbag, gift card, and other special prizes.
All graduating students were then called forward to receive their D.A.R.E. certificate. Mrs. Moore closed the ceremony with encouraging words of wisdom and parents were allowed to take photos with their graduate.
After graduation, it was off to Country Club Lanes and Ci-Ci’s Pizza for a day of celebrating. A great time was had by all!
The fifth graders would like to give a special shout out to our local Ci-Ci’s Pizza (Church Street, Burlington) and Texas Roadhouse for their help in making our graduation possible. The fundraiser nights they sponsored helped make D.A.R.E. Graduation extra special!
