This past week some of our high school Grizzlies participated in a field trip to historic Charleston, South Carolina. Our students participated in a variety of exciting and educational activities.

Our students started their Charleston adventures with a nighttime ghost tour through the historic cobblestone streets. During the tour, the student heard ghost stories and learned about Charleston’s rich history.

Day two started with a stop at the Charleston Museum. Here the students experienced the history of the “Low Country” first-hand, while participating in interactive activities.

Later in the day, the group experienced a beautiful ferry ride to Fort Sumter. This fort served as a military stronghold during the Civil War. After touring Sumter students and parents made their way to the USS Yorktown. The Yorktown is the aircraft carrier that retrieved the Apollo 11 flight capsule from the Pacific in the 1960s. The tour of this historic vessel was an awesome experience! The second day finished with more fun bowling at Stars and Strikes!

The last day in Charleston started with a visit to the Charleston Tea Plantation. This plantation is the only tea plantation in the United States. While at the plantation the group enjoyed a trolley tour of the farming operation, received an inside look at the equipment used to process the tea, and tasted some famous Charleston tea. The students were impressed to find out that since 1987, the American Classic Tea brand of the Charleston Tea Plantation has been the official tea of the White House

No trip to Charleston would be complete without a visit to the historic Angel Oak. This Southern Live Oak is estimated to be four to five hundred years old. After photos and a quick break at the Angel Tree students were ready for a visit to the South Carolina Aquarium. Here students learned about turtle rehabilitation, wildlife research and marine biology.

The final stop on this fun-filled trip was the historic Charleston City Market where the group purchased local-made goods that included; Gullah hand-woven sweetgrass baskets, jewelry, artwork and much more. Anyone interested in attending next year’s high school field trip should contact Mr. Kistler!
